Context: Unauthorised Firecracker Stalls in Pune

The PMC has identified several unauthorised firecracker stalls operating in densely populated areas, including Sadashiv Peth, Yerawada, Lohegaon, and along Sinhagad Road. These stalls are reportedly operating under makeshift cloth sheds, raising concerns over fire safety. The civic body has warned that the absence of fire brigade clearance could lead to major loss of life and property in the event of an accident.

PMC’s Response to Unauthorised Firecracker Stalls

“We have already started taking action against shops operating without permission, particularly those located in densely populated areas or on footpaths and roads,” said Somnath Bankar, head of the PMC’s anti-encroachment department. The department has received a letter from the fire brigade seeking action against illegal stalls. A joint drive involving staff from both departments will help ensure effective enforcement.

The PMC’s crackdown on illegal firecracker stalls is a welcome move, considering the fire safety concerns in the city. The civic body must ensure that all firecracker stalls operate within the designated areas and comply with the laid-down conditions. The residents of Pune expect the PMC to maintain a safe and secure environment, especially during festive seasons.

The next steps for the PMC include intensifying the crackdown on unauthorised firecracker stalls and ensuring that all vendors comply with the laid-down conditions. The civic body must also educate the residents about the risks associated with firecracker stalls and the importance of fire safety during Diwali celebrations.
